Australia’s Most Beloved Beach Town, at the Continent’s Eastern Edge
Byron Bay sits at the easternmost point of mainland Australia, where the Pacific Ocean meets a coastline of extraordinary beauty. It is a place that has drawn artists, surfers, dreamers and seekers for generations, and while it has grown considerably from its small fishing town origins, it retains an irreplaceable energy. Lighthouse walks at sunrise, farmers markets on Saturday mornings, yoga retreats in the hinterland, and some of the best surf breaks in New South Wales, Byron Bay does everything with warmth, colour and a spirit that is entirely its own.
The Beaches That Define Byron Bay
Main Beach is Byron’s heart — a long curve of golden sand sheltered by the headland and perfect for swimming. Just around the corner, The Pass offers one of the most beautiful right-hand point breaks in Australia, beloved by longboarders and beginner surfers alike. Wategos Beach is Byron’s most romantic, a small, sheltered cove with gentle waves and views toward the lighthouse. For those who want wilder, more solitary sand, Broken Head and Seven Mile Beach to the south reward the extra drive with near-empty stretches of pristine coast.
Cape Byron Lighthouse and the Hinterland Villages
The walk to Cape Byron Lighthouse is one of the most rewarding short hikes in New South Wales, a 4-kilometre loop through coastal heath to the most easterly point of mainland Australia, with views of dolphins in the waves below and whales offshore during migration season (June to November). The Byron Bay hinterland reveals a different world: Bangalow, Mullumbimby and Nimbin are small villages with great farmers markets, alternative culture and lush green valleys that feel a world away from the beach.
Getting to and Around Byron Bay
Byron Bay is approximately 2 hours south of Brisbane and 8 hours north of Sydney by road. Ballina Byron Gateway Airport (30 minutes south) offers direct flights from Sydney, Melbourne and Canberra. Gold Coast Airport (1 hour north) has broader connections. Bus services connect Byron Bay to Brisbane and Sydney. Within Byron Bay, cycling is the most enjoyable way to explore, the town is flat, compact and cycle-friendly.
A Hot Getaways destination. Where Care is Our Compass.
Travel Kindly
At Hot Getaways, care is our compass — and a little kindness makes every journey better. When you visit Australia, we gently ask you to:
- Care for the land and sea — tread lightly, take your rubbish with you, and help keep Australia’s wild places pristine.
- Respect the wildlife — admire our unique animals from a distance, never feed them, and give them room to be wild.
- Support local — choosing local operators, cafés and guides helps this beautiful place thrive.
- Honour Country — we travel on the traditional lands and sea Country of Australia’s First Peoples, with gratitude and respect to the Traditional Custodians past and present.
- Be kind to each other — a smile, a little patience and a helping hand make the day lovelier for everyone.
Small acts of care add up to something wonderful. Thank you for travelling kindly.
