Where the red pindan cliffs of the Kimberley meet the Indian Ocean, Broome is a frontier town like no other. Famous for its pearling history, its multicultural roots and its impossibly long beaches, Broome blends laid-back tropical charm with genuine outback character. It is the classic gateway to the Kimberley and a destination in its own right.

Twenty-two kilometres of pure white sand meeting turquoise water, Cable Beach is the heart of Broome. Watch the sun sink into the ocean, take a sunset camel ride along the shore — one of Australia’s most iconic images — or simply swim and unwind. At low tide the beach stretches out impossibly wide beneath the huge Kimberley sky.

Pearls and Pioneering History

Broome grew up around the pearling industry, and that heritage still shapes the town today. Explore historic Chinatown, visit a working pearl farm, and learn the remarkable, often difficult stories of the divers from across Asia and the Pacific who built the industry. Broome’s cultural mix — Yawuru, Asian and European — gives the town its unique character.

Natural Wonders

Staircase to the Moon phenomenon over the mud flats, Western Australia
The famous “Staircase to the Moon”

When a full moon rises over the exposed mud flats of Roebuck Bay, it creates the famous “Staircase to the Moon” — a shimmering optical illusion of golden steps reaching to the horizon. At Gantheaume Point, 130-million-year-old dinosaur footprints are revealed at very low tide, and the surrounding coast glows in vivid red and orange.

When to Visit

Broome’s peak season is the Dry, from May to October, with warm sunny days, low humidity and perfect beach weather. This is also when the Staircase to the Moon appears on full-moon nights. The Wet season (November to April) is hot, humid and dramatic, with spectacular electrical storms and far fewer visitors.

Getting There

Broome has its own airport with direct flights from Perth, and seasonal connections from other capitals. It sits at the western end of the Kimberley, making it the natural starting or finishing point for a Gibb River Road adventure or a Kimberley coastal cruise.

A Hot Getaways destination. Where Care is Our Compass.

Travel Kindly

At Hot Getaways, care is our compass — and a little kindness makes every journey better. When you visit Australia, we gently ask you to:

  • Care for the land and sea — tread lightly, take your rubbish with you, and help keep Australia’s wild places pristine.
  • Respect the wildlife — admire our unique animals from a distance, never feed them, and give them room to be wild.
  • Support local — choosing local operators, cafés and guides helps this beautiful place thrive.
  • Honour Country — we travel on the traditional lands and sea Country of Australia’s First Peoples, with gratitude and respect to the Traditional Custodians past and present.
  • Be kind to each other — a smile, a little patience and a helping hand make the day lovelier for everyone.

Small acts of care add up to something wonderful. Thank you for travelling kindly.
