Where the Reef Meets the Shore

Ningaloo Reef is one of the rare places on Earth where a world-class coral reef runs right up to the beach. Stretching for more than 260 kilometres along Western Australia’s remote Coral Coast, this UNESCO World Heritage-listed fringing reef lets you step off the sand and snorkel over living coral within minutes — no boat required. It is wild, uncrowded and utterly unforgettable.

Swim With Giants

Ningaloo is world-famous for its gentle giants. Between March and August, whale sharks — the largest fish in the ocean — gather here, and Ningaloo is one of the few places on the planet where you can reliably swim beside them. From June to November, humpback whales pass through, and manta rays glide over the reef year-round. Turtles nest along the coast in the warmer months, and the snorkelling straight off Turquoise Bay is among the best anywhere.

Beaches, Gorges and the Cape Range

Just inland, Cape Range National Park rises in a spine of ancient limestone gorges and canyons, home to red kangaroos, emus and rock wallabies. The contrast is striking: rust-red ranges on one side, brilliant white beaches and turquoise water on the other. Yardie Creek, Mandu Mandu Gorge and the pristine sands of Turquoise Bay are all highlights worth setting aside time for.

When to Visit

The best time to visit Ningaloo is during the dry season, from April to October, when days are warm, skies are clear and the water is calm and clear for snorkelling. Whale shark season runs roughly March to August, making the cooler months especially rewarding. Summer (December to February) is hot and humid, so most visitors plan around the milder, drier stretch of the year.

Getting There

The gateway towns are Exmouth and Coral Bay, both around a 2-hour flight from Perth to Learmonth Airport, followed by a short drive. Many travellers make Ningaloo part of a longer Coral Coast road trip up from Perth. However you arrive, the reward is the same: some of the most accessible, pristine reef in the world.

  • Respect the wildlife — admire our unique animals from a distance, never feed them, and give them room to be wild.
  • Support local — choosing local operators, cafés and guides helps this beautiful place thrive.
  • Honour Country — we travel on the traditional lands and sea Country of Australia’s First Peoples, with gratitude and respect to the Traditional Custodians past and present.
  • Be kind to each other — a smile, a little patience and a helping hand make the day lovelier for everyone.
